My name is Chance Greene and I am number eleven (#11) on the Voyager Academy High School varsity basketball team and number five (#5) on USA United AAU team. I have been playing basketball since I was about three years old and am currently a 5’9” point guard. My overall best contribution to my team is that people respect me because I respect them, not just as a person but also as a player.
I am the starting point guard as a junior on Varsity and we completed the season with a school record 29-3 record and advanced to the state quarterfinals for the first time in school history. Throughout these games I have averaged 8.4 points and 4.1 assists while running our high-powered offense. I lead the team with a conference best 121 assists, 48 made 3-pointers and a team high 88% free throw percentage. In addition to a new highlight video, I have added complete game videos to my attached profile from games against Riverside and Ravenscroft. Both are larger schools that our team had huge wins against. We beat Riverside in the Moody Holiday tournament in Rock Hill, SC where we went 3-1 against 4A competition. I contributed 15 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists in the win. I was named player of the game against Ravenscoft, a local tradition- rich program, as I led the team to victory with 24 points including six 3-pointers, 5 assists, 3 rebounds and 2 steals. As a point guard, I have the ball in my hand a lot and I have learned that turnovers are and can be very costly as the game progresses, so I have limited my turnovers and now have a 3-1 assist to turnover ratio.
My freshman year, I received the Viking Award. I was a captain on Junior Varsity for my sophomore year and received the MVP award. In my sophomore year on Junior Varsity, I averaged 10 points and 9 assists a game. Throughout my three years of high school basketball I have put together a 54-11 record and in middle school I had a record of 41-1 in my two years.
With this being said I have a winner’s mentality which leads to great success. The devotion to my team and my pursuit of physical and mental fitness has awarded me the privilege of being a huge impact player for my. I am working hard in the classroom and the gym and hope to go on to play basketball with a reputable institution where I can excel at getting an above average education and being an excellent student-athlete. My passion for playing basketball and my efforts to continually improve my GPA has proven to be a great combination in moving towards my senior year. I currently keep a 3.1 GPA which I expect to be higher at the end of the year and scored a 26 on my pre ACT. My dedication and hard work would be displayed to you always on and off the court.
Up to this point, I have logged approximately 40 hours of community service. Each year through Voyager Academy, we participate in immersion, a time (usually during spring break) where we volunteer to make a difference in our city. I have been to Durham Parks and Rec, where we removed trash to aid in cleanliness and make it a better looking place; the Durham County Food Bank, where I helped pack lunches and load boxes of food to send off to people and families in need; the Ronald McDonald House, where I spent time with kids, and there is nothing more special than to see a kid that isn’t well smile, laugh and joke around with you. It was a great experience for me as a person.
I strive to be my best in everything I do. Given an opportunity to be a part of your team and uphold such a position would be my privilege, so I thank you for your thoughtful consideration in selecting me, Chance Greene, as a potentially new “team player” on behalf of your school.
