Details

Dillon is a very talented player with an extensive soccer background. He plays at both the advanced club level and for his high school team. He has competed in various tournaments and has consistently been involved in the game for 10+ years.

Strengths

Dillon is very confident with the ball, his foot skills are excellent and he is predominately right footed. He has great vision and good movement during an attacking play. His distribution skills for both the short and long pass are very good. He has good break out speed and can recover very well should an offside trap fail.

Weakness

Dillon would benefit from additional strength and endurance training.

Observations

Ball Control (Technical):  Excellent ball control in both passing and receiving.

Passing:   He is very confident with the ball and distributes it with accuracy and with good pace.

Vision(Tactical):  Dillon understands the rhythm of the game and marks his opponent effectively. He has a fantastic clearance and knows how to play the supportive role of a defender.

Defending:  Dillon has good physical presence and is not afraid to do what is necessary to win the ball. His athletic ability make him an asset when defending.

Mental & Endurance: Upon multiple first hand observations, Dillon keeps his emotions in check, he communicates effectively with his team mates and displays proper etiquette when addressing the referee. His physical endurance will improve with additional stamina conditioning.

Summary Assessment

Dillon would make a great addition to any college level program D3 through NAIA that is seeking the services of a defender. His ability to read the attack and help coordinate with other defenders make him an effective player. Dillon has great vision and understands the game both offensively and defensively. His technically ability is very good, and he moves the ball with purpose and vision. His defending is aggressive and his ability to head the ball effectively is critical to defending on set pieces.. I feel Dillon could play at the D2 level with some extra strength and conditioning but would easily flourish at any other college level.

Dear Coaches,

Hello from St. Augustine, Florida.  I am Dillon Mathena and I am a senior in high school who desires to attend a university where I can challenge myself both academically, and physically in the game of soccer.   My love for soccer began when I first played organized soccer at the age of 4 years, and I have been playing club/travel soccer ever since. I also play on my high school team as center back and captain, though my preferred position is right back. Last year I made the all-conference team and this year as the season begins, I look forward to pushing myself even harder.

My coaches have told me that my overall best asset on the pitch is my vison of the game and the past few years I have used this to develop my leadership skills.  I have been told I am one of the hardest workers on and off the field, and the comment I hear most often is that I am consistent. I have always enjoyed being a starter on the defense, but I will fill in wherever I am needed and constantly strive to learn from my teammates and coaches.

Over the past two years I have devoted extra time to working on my speed and my touches, I believe I have made significant progress in both areas.

I have strived to maintain balance in academics, sports and community. My current unweighted GPA is a 3.7 and my weighted GPA is 4.3. I am a class officer, on the National Honor Society and am involved in community service. I would be honored to be asked to “prove” myself with your team, as well as academically at your institution. My attitude and work ethic will be skills I would like to have the opportunity to demonstrate, and I think you will find me to be very “coachable” at the college level.

I look forward to meeting you, thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Dillon J. Mathena
