Player: Delaia Valdez Grad Year: 2017 Position: Catcher 2nd Position: Utility
Club Team: OC Strikeforce (CA) HT: 5’4’’ WT: 105
Delaia definitely has strong fundamentals to play the game at the next level. I see her success more as a Utility player/runner/DP given her speed and size at a smaller D1 school. If looking to stick mainly with catching, I would recommend as D2/D3. As stated, her fundamentals are sound, but I see her strengths are in her hitting and her speed, which will be extremely useful and important to D1/D2 schools. Below are my evaluations for offense and defense.
Strengths: Good throwing form. I love that she approaches the ball with two hands when making a throw to second, that is vital for quick throws. Majority of Framing is very good, just stick the pitches (especially the inside and sell it).
Areas to Improve: Do NOT drop left knee on every pitch; it is a horrible habit. It causes too much movement, is distracting to umpires and also forces you into a position that is difficult to get out of should the ball go a different direction. Showing signals far too low which makes them easy to steal. Signals should be tucked in tight right up against the body. Also, bring the knees closer together in the stance. Too wide open again making it very easy to steal signals. Delaia needs to pop quicker from the squat to throw to second. She should already be moving toward the ball before it gets into the glove and then stay low, rather than standing up completely. There is so little time to get the ball to second that every second counts.
Strengths: Good power and bat control. I Love that she hits to all fields and is quick out of the box and great with base running. Delaia is always looking to take the next base. That’s huge and difficult to teach; it is a trusted reaction and she has that - GREAT!
Areas to Improve: EXPLODE on contact and drive that back leg! She gets power, but right now it is all upper body. Imagine if the lower body was engage more and there was explosion and drive from the lower body - WATCH OUT!
The other positions shown (2nd, 1st and Outfield) show the utility but I do not see one stick out more than the others, just a good showing of versatility and again good fundamentals.
